I have been a spiritual teacher since 2010, and I’ve learned a lot since then. I have yet to find “energy.” What I have found are unnamed subconscious emotional and physical responses. These include:

  • General unresolved emotions
  • Trauma
  • Forgotten ego associations
  • Excessive stress
  • Poor lifestyle habits, and many other explainable human experiences

Spiritual awakening takes you where you want to go…where your true self REALLY want to go.

This is often very different than where your ego thinks you should be going. Unfortunately, some people are pointed in such unhealthy and harmful directions that they have to do a complete 180 degree turn, and this really is the end of their old lives. To someone so deeply unconscious and now awakened, this feels like a horrendous trial, but it is truthfully where this person most wants to go. Because it’s where the person’s soul wants to go.

For many of you, part of what you want to do in this world involves being highly energetically sensitive and using those tools to varying degrees. I want to introduce (or reintroduce) the idea that energy sensitivity is no different than having a left hand. If you didn’t have a left hand, you wouldn’t use it. If you do have it, then you use it. The way people often approach energy sensitivity is to say, “OH MY GOD! I HAVE A LEFT HAND!” And then they try to deny it or ignore it or–goodness gracious–try to cut it off because it isn’t what society currently considers normal (And social ideas around normality change constantly, so you shouldn’t lose much sleep over them anyway).

Spiritual awakening simply brings into your awareness that you have this left hand or–in this case–these energy sensitivities. The ways you tried to numb or suppress them often disappear upon awakening, and so many of you become even more sensitive to yourself and to life than before. Some people who didn’t think they were sensitive or who truly weren’t suddenly can feel whole new worlds of sensations.

This can be overwhelming, but it is a great gift. And today’s post is about helping you own, honor, and hone the gift of energetic sensitivity.

The Energy Drain of Every Day Life

One of the reasons that many people don’t like being energetically sensitive is because they often feel drained or polluted by other people and a lot of situations in everyday life. They come to think of their sensitivity as a bad thing. Since Western Culture is pretty adamant that being tough and de-sensitized is a good thing, this makes being a sensitive person doubly-hard. And it certainly doesn’t teach you how to manage and be with these sensitivities in a healthy way.

Recently a student relayed an example of something she saw in the airport. A father was yelling at his daughter to stop crying and other things to that nature. The overall message to the little girl was that her feelings aren’t okay, and she needed to avoid or suppress upset feelings. This could possibly be one of those critical moments that will define how she treats difficult emotions the rest of her life unless she is so lucky as you to have the interest to go looking for spirituality blogs like this one.

What these messages around desensitization meas to the energy sensitive person is that they should A) deny their sensitivities, B) not show anyone that they have them, and C) find ways to suppress feelings. This last one is horribly toxic because people then expend huge amounts of energy to numb themselves. And when we’re numb we can’t feel much of anything, not even the good feelings.

Numbing Yourself to Life and Over-stimulation

Why We Get Drained

Because we don’t even engage with these energy sensitivities, we never stop to ask a very important question: why do we get drained? If you’re sensitive to energy, physical vibration, and emotions, I pose this question to you: do you know why you get drained energetically?

Most people have no clue, and this is the problem with ignorance. If we haven’t even looked into something, we cannot know how it works. And since your sensitivities go with you everywhere you go, it’s really important to get to know them and how they work.

Now, there can be lots of reasons we get drained energetically, but here are a few of the common ways:

  • We give too much and don’t allow others to give back to us.
  • We have hidden or obvious interests in the energy of others. In this way, we hook onto their issues, and that becomes like a siphon, draining your energy. This happens A LOT!
  • We are healing or spiritually growing a lot.
  • We do not have a strong energetic center because we seek things from others. This will mean that any low energy environment will feel like it is sucking the life out of you.

For bullet number two, I want you to think of situation where you want others to be happy. Now imagine that someone isn’t happy, and their unhappiness is triggering your hidden lack of self worth issue. The combination (but mainly your issue) starts to agitate and upset you, and that leads to you expending energy as you’re getting activation internally. Because people are taught to blame the external world for a lot of things, a sensitive person blames the other person for being unhappy and that’s why they’re unhappy and feeling bad. This isn’t a healthy response, and if the person wants to be at energetic peace with unhappy people, they have to deal with their own unhappiness first.

Energy Sickness and Feeling Drained Energetically

Expanding Energy Sensitivities and the Re-Sensitization Process

In world that is so desensitized and numb, many people go through a re-sensitization process as part of their spiritual growth or after a spiritual awakening. Essentially, you’re just getting used to feeling normally–or rather you are getting used to naturally feeling life through your personal sensitivities.

As you go into your spiritual work and release issues, you may find that your sensitivities enhance. Think of each issue like another numbing agent or wall blinding you to greater sight. As the issue goes away, it is easier to feel more and sense more. As you sense more, you get greater insights into all of life around you. This becomes an amazingly powerful tool for continued growth as it gets easier to see how and when you get triggered. Then you can use those triggering moments to find the hidden inner emotional landmines inside you. Once you defuse them, the same situation doesn’t bother you even if it is “energetically” low (whatever that may mean to you–people misunderstand and misinterpret energy a lot).

With the release of yet another issue, your sensitivities are sharpened and enhanced further. So you only become more sensitive as you go further in your spiritual growth. But you are more at peace because the ups and downs of the world around you have less inner pain to trigger in you to upset you.

Finding Energetically Supportive Spaces and People

Initially, many sensitive people are seeking a refuge from the world. A momentary refuge isn’t a bad thing. Especially if you are newly awakened and feel like you went from listening to gently playing classical music to a screaming death metal rock concert, some time in a spiritual sanctuary can be a really good thing.

But you can’t run away from yourself.

As such, hiding around “supportive” energetic friends, places, and teachers is not a solution to dealing with your issues that get triggered by everyday life. Actually, because you are so easily triggered, you are forced to deal with issues that others who aren’t as sensitive will not know about for years if ever. Many people will never know why they can’t make friends. They’re completely in the dark about how their interactions and energy affect others. And while there are a lot of ways to get insights, your inner knowing and your energetic sensitivity are the fastest, most powerful, and ever present toolset anyone can ever have. You don’t have to go to a psychic to tell you what is energetically going on in the room or what’s going on with your family. You already know, although you may need to learn how to interpret it all.

As you grow, you will find that some places and people are naturally supportive, and it may not be the places and people you thought. If you carried a lot of pain inside you, really loving and supportive people can potentially trigger that pain. As such, you would have misinterpreted a really healthy person as an enemy or as an energy drain on you instead of seeing the gift they are to you. When you clear your issues, then of course it is much easier to see how this person is supporting you. In which case, I encourage you to step into connection with them to enjoy that deeper and natural support.

Finding Your Sanctuary

The Natural Growth of Your Energetic Abilities

How much you grow and how sensitive you become is partially up to you and partially about how you naturally are. But these sensitivities do grow and expand if they are allowed. Obviously, now I’m talking to those of you who have done more than a little self work. And the more sensitive you are, the more work you’ll tend to need to do to be at peace with all the junk and nastiness floating around in this world. People are truly locked up in a lot of fear. That creates its own vibration and energy field, which isn’t a whole lot of fun.

But as I said, the more fear and issues you release, the less the external world stuff  can upset you. What can still be triggered in you also gets easier and easier to find. Since you’ll have learned that you can enjoy greater and greater freedom through spiritual work, once you find something, you go more quickly into it. Your sensitivities further tell you what is needed–if anything–and how to address this latest finding. So by this point, you really have owned and honed your energetic abilities and sensitivities. This inner perception and sensitivity contribute to your natural growth that expands your knowledge about the world and people around you, although I generally want to emphasize that knowing yourself is far more important.

The Awakened Self and Energy Flows

Because awakening opens up a lot of energy, you will tend to feel a lot of new sensations that you don’t have names for at first. I encourage you to rest and relax. Don’t rush to interpret things. Interpreting energy is a tricky thing at best even for those of us who are really good at it and have practiced a lot. I generally breakdown interpretation of energy into four levels:

  • The initial energy that is felt
  • Thought energy
  • Language
  • Words

I don’t see thought energy and language as the same. I feel like there’s a subtle distinction in there for how the brain works to take energy into thought energy and then interpret it into language. The last step–to put something into words–may seem easy enough, but how often do people misspeak something even though they are fluent in a language? My main point here is that a lot goes on to interpret energy, and especially at the beginning, you may not be particularly good at it. Just do your best to relax and stay open as you learn to let your intuition help you interpret new sensations that you are experiencing.

Enjoying Your Energy Sensitivities

Since there is so much nasty junk floating around people, feeling sensitive to life isn’t fun for a lot of untrained people. The more pain and suffering you have inside, the worse the world will feel to you. But when you’ve trained and healed yourself, you’ll find that these sensitivities have a huge upside. You can feel deep connections more easily and naturally. You can help point others in the right direction for meaningful healing because you can just feel where their pain is held. You can enjoy the simple pleasures of life beit food or the wind on your body even more. The lovely sensations and connections that might be missed or only partially enjoyed by others become a bounty and buffet of pleasure and enjoyment. And of course sex and touch and physical intimacy can explode into new places for you because of your sensitivities.

There’s even more than this to be enjoyed and learned from being an energetically sensitive person. The main point is this: if you’ve just awakened and feel really sensitive, it’s okay. But you have to learn how to be with these sensitivities and do your inner work. If you’re not awakened and are a sensitive person, you have to learn how to be with your sensitivities. When you do, life can open and unfold before you in a variety of sensations and profound connections that you could have never dreamed of before.
