I often talk about the importance of spiritual community, although I want you to consider my rungs of the ladder metaphor in understanding this. When you’re on the first rung of the ladder, that’s important. But later on you, you don’t use the first rung of the ladder when you’re on the sixth. While the spiritual path isn’t that linear, I encourage you to appreciate how we develop. Some things are important at one time, and later on, they’re not important at all. Spiritual community is often one of those things.

Initially, having the right spiritual network to guide and support someone can be critical to helping them see their ego and get out of old behavior patterns. Since it is very common for someone to seek people who reflect their own beliefs, it is easy to build the “wrong” spiritual network. In this “wrong” network, we go towards people who reinforce what we already believe rather than helping us to understand ourselves so that we clearly see the truth. This keeps people trapped in all kinds of ego patterns. Can we learn from a “wrong” network? Sure, but that requires a certain level of awareness. Plenty of people are in all kinds of unhealthy situations, but they never learn anything and suffer tons. Usually we first need some help developing awareness to be able to learn anything about the communities we move through.

So, I wanted to offer some insights into how to create this spiritual network to help you peel away the ego self and support you on your spiritual journey.
