I regularly get a variety of questions that go something like this:

How do I get my friends to understand this new spiritual path I’m on?

How do I explain to my partner how to be spiritual?

How do I find work that aligns with my spiritual truth?

These and other questionss are essentially asking the same underlying question: “How do I be my new ‘spiritual’ self?”

While they sound rational enough, few people question these questions to find out where they are coming from. This typically leads to what I call “re-papering the prison cell walls.”

When someone has a major spiritual shift or even a spiritual awakening, it’s like the wallpaper (illusions) covering the walls of the prison cell are ripped off. This revealing is often confused as being the end-all and be-all of the spiritual path. The ego–and it is the ego doing this–assumes all work towards enlightenment is over now that they’ve shed these initial issues/illusions. “Now, how do I be enlightened?” the ego will ask.

But what are the motivations underneath that question and other questions listed above? What outcomes are trying to be achieved? What outcomes are trying to be avoided? These are some of the questions that can help you go deeper in your inner work to understand the walls, floor, and ceiling of the prison in which you still are. In so inquiring, you can avoid getting stuck in the trap of a “spiritual” ego.
